The M lab is a theatrical laboratory for visual innovations and design technologies in the live arts. Founded by designers Tobin Rothlein and James Clotfelter, the laboratory seeks to challenge existing staging practices while developing and exploring new methodologies for meaningful, balanced uses of multimedia design. The M Lab is an integral part of Miro Dance Theatre and enables Miro to fulfill its mission of embracing contemporary multi-media techniques and sharing technological research and innovation with the general and artistic communities.
The goals of Mlab are:
- To aid in providing the necessary
and often limited resources in the development and creation of multi medium
work: space, time, equipment and personnel.
- To provide consulting services and educational opportunities.
- To support, develop,
and disseminate the unique work and design aesthetic of Tobin Rothlein and
James Clotfelter, including design commissions, installations, and open laboratory showings
- To document and publish
laboratory activities, conclusions, and processes in the form of case studies,
essays, and work journals
- Develop international
relationships promoting cross-cultural dialogue and collaborative work.
We will carry forward the goals of Mlab by:
- The establishment of
creative and mutually beneficial partnerships with other organizations with
a focus on institutions of higher learning.
- The hosting of laboratory
workshops with invited master-artists of all disciplines.
- The development of new
work in residency at Mlab.
- Facilitation of think
tanks, panel discussions, and narrative and theme based experiments with leading
innovators of the field and invited guests.
- Providing educational
and outreach opportunities in the form of open laboratories for students of
arts and design, and arrangements with partner organizations to present invited
guests and artists in residence to the greater community.
